Panasonic Showcases Groundbreaking Full HD 3D Technology

At the Panasonic Convention in Munich, Germany, Panasonic announced the introduction of its new VT20 3D Plasma TVs in Europe, featuring screen sizes of 50 and 65-inch, in addition to the company’s new DMP-BDT300 3D Blu-ray Player. Plasma technology offers a number of important advantages with respect to 3D, such as cross-talk reduction, crisp & clear high-quality moving pictures and enhanced luminance efficiency and improved picture-quality even when viewing 2D content. Panasonic will also be elaborating on its recently announced technology tie-up with RealD. The two companies recently announced a partnership aimed at developing and continuously improving technologies that will enable an even higher quality user experience in 3D viewing.

Panasonic Full HD 3D Technology
Thanks to a large number of technological innovations, television has undergone a constant evolution over the years. While at the start, it was merely regarded as a means for reproducing images, its significance increased when connectivity with other AV devices was added. With the growing popularity of HD TVs and the availability of high quality content, TV was yet again taken to a new level. Now, with Full HD 3D technology, it has turned into a device that delivers an immersive viewing experience and literally moved into an era of the “next dimension.”

Panasonic now offers a line-up of Full HD 3D products that meet the demands of even the most discerning consumers. The new range of Full HD 3D-capable VIERA Plasma HDTVs and the fully-featured DMP-BDT300 Blu-ray 3DTM Disc player bring a new era of immersive visual entertainment into consumers’ homes by creating a 3D experience that easily rivals the best that can be seen in cinemas.

The first two fully-featured Full HD 3D VIERA Plasma HDTVs will be available in spring of 2010. The VT20 line-up will initially consist of the 50-inch TX-P50VT20 and the top-of-the-line 65-inch TX-P65VT20. Both will incorporate a sophisticated design with a frame in bronze metallic colour. Two pairs of Panasonic 3D Eyewear are included with the above models.

To create the best possible 3D picture, Panasonic has developed new, faster screen phosphors coupled with its 600Hz sub-field drive technology. The new displays output alternating imagery at 60 frames per second to each eye. The brain then combines the images and perceives them as 3D. By enhancing the video reproduction capability of PDP, which thanks to 600 Hz has full moving picture resolution, the technology enables crisp and clear, high-quality 3D images.

Since displaying 3D images involves alternate displays of left- and right-eye images, reducing the overlap (cross-talk) between these images is essential for high-quality 3D images. Panasonic’s VT20 series uses a frame-sequential method that displays images frame by frame extremely quickly, making use of PDPs’ rapid response times and thus dramatically reducing crosstalk. The use of newly-developed phosphors with short luminescence decay time - one third the time of conventional phosphors - as well as illumination control technology has enabled the cross-talk reduction technology to successfully minimize double images.

THX® Certified Display certification even ensures that every Panasonic Full HD 3D TV displays movies with exactly the quality and color palette that the director intended. In addition to this, each Full HD 3D Plasma model incorporates a rich set of advanced features, such as VIERA CAST, which offers users access to various online contents, VIERA Link, which allows Panasonic owners to control their VIERA Link-compatible audio and video products with only one remote, and the VIERA Image Viewer, which enables users to easily view pictures, HD movies and listen to music stored on an SD card on their VIERA TV.

With Panasonic’s demonstrated “eco ideas” commitment to minimizing the impact of its products on the environment, all new Full HD 3D plasma panels are designed with an effective screen half-life of 100,000 hours, or over 30 years of TV viewing. To cut toxic waste when the television does reach the end of its life, all models are manufactured without using mercury or lead.
Panasonic Integrates Technologies from RealD for 3D Eyewear and VIERA® 3D TVs
Panasonic and RealD, the global leader in 3D technology for cinema, home and professional applications, have now also announced a technology tie-up that will enable consumers who purchase Panasonic’s Full HD 3D VIERA TVs to enjoy a high quality Full HD 3D viewing experience powered with RealD’s Active Shutter Glass Technology and 3D content delivered using the stereoscopic RealD Format. The companies will also be working together to evaluate next generation technologies that enable an even higher quality user experience in 3D viewing.

The RealD Format paired with Panasonic’s RealD-enabled VIERA HDTVs will give television fans all over the world access to high definition 3D content with the HD set-top box in their homes. The RealD Format is a proprietary version of a side-by-side 3D format that uses a unique set of technologies to multiplex a left eye and right eye 3D image stream into a single channel. This format is capable of delivering high definition 3D content to any 3D-enabled display type using today’s HD infrastructure.

Panasonic’s new DMP-BDT300 3D Full HD Blu-ray disc player puts out stunning, rock-solid, and immersive Full HD 3D imagery to compatible displays. The player also handles a wide variety of audio standards and up converts all standard definition video formats to 1080p. The BDT300 is capable of playing standard Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and CDs. The DMP-BDT300 utilizes groundbreaking technologies incorporated in Panasonic’s proprietary UniPhier LSI chip, enabling the player to flawlessly process the large quantity of visual information necessary to create a FULL HD 3D image in 1920 x 1080 resolution. Adaptive Chroma Upsampling ensures that colors are faithfully reproduced; and all native digital DVD formats are upscaled to 1080p resolution quality.

The new Full HD 3D Blu-ray player incorporates all of the features one would expect in a high-end product, including VIERA Cast Internet link, BD Live, 7.1 channel lossless audio, as well as Dolby® True HD and DTS™ HD audio formats. Digital still photographs and HD video can be easily viewed through the player’s SD Memory Card slot.
Panasonic to showcase the world’s first integrated Full HD 3D Camcorder
Panasonic will also be showcasing the world’s first* professional, fully-integrated Full HD 3D camcorder. Professional users will find this Full HD 3D camcorder much easier to use since the lenses, camera head, and a dual Memory Card recorder are all integrated into a single lightweight body. The camcorder also incorporates stereoscopic adjustment controls that make it easier to operate. Furthermore, the solid-state memory file-based recording system offers greater flexibility for producing Full HD 3D videos in more challenging shooting environments. The camcorder is light in weight and smaller than current 3D rigs, while providing the flexibility of handheld-style shooting. Setup and transportation has been simplified to make it ideal for sports, documentary and film-making projects.

Right and left Full HD video streams of the twin-lens 3D camcorder can be recorded as files on SD Memory Cards to ensure higher reliability than other tape, optical disc, HDD or other mechanical-based recording systems offer. The 3D camcorder will also be able to perform well in extreme environments and resist temperature extremes, shock, and vibration. Professional users will appreciate the fast, highly-productive file-based workflow, with instant, random access to recorded content; easy plug-in to both Mac and PC-based platforms; and longer recording capacity.
Panasonic develops world’s largest 152-inch full HD 3D Plasma Display
Panasonic has also developed the world’s largest 152-inch 4K x 2K definition 3D plasma display. The display features a revolutionary new plasma display panel (PDP) that Panasonic has developed with its new super-efficient quadruple luminous efficiency technology. The technology enhances PDPs’ unique advantages as a self-illuminating device and thus contributes towards delivering an overwhelming immersive experience for viewers. The Panasonic 152-inch Full HD 3D PDP creates a true Full HD 3D world by faithfully reproducing 3D content such as Hollywood 3D movie titles.

Thus, Panasonic can offer a fully integrated solution for the 3D world – ranging from professional camcorders to create 3D content; via 3D authoring and encoding facilities; to 3D televisions and Blu-ray players, which will bring the 3D content to customers’ living-rooms.
